The Catholic community in Ecuador is mourning the death of Father Patricio Sánchez Molinari, a Redemptorist priest who died after a heavy wooden crucifix fell on him during Mass at the Church of Our Lady of Perpetual Help in Guayaquil on Saturday, October 17, 2026.
The tragic incident occurred just a day after the priest marked another anniversary of his ordination. Reports indicate that he was ordained on October 15, 2005, meaning he had completed 21 years of priestly service.
According to reports from Ecuador, the crucifix fell from its position behind the altar and struck the priest on the head as he celebrated Mass. The incident was captured on a livestream of the service.
Father Sánchez's death has left parishioners and fellow clergy in mourning. He served in several communities across Ecuador, including Loja, Durán, Manta, Vinces and Guayaquil, where he dedicated his ministry to the spiritual care of the faithful.
His remains were transported to his hometown of Cuenca on Monday, October 19, ahead of his burial on Tuesday, October 20, at Camposanto Santa Ana.
Following the incident, the Archdiocese of Guayaquil said it was awaiting a technical report to establish the circumstances that led to the crucifix falling. The cause of the accident had not been officially established in the reports available.
As the Church mourns his passing, many are remembering his years of service and the people he ministered to throughout his priesthood.
The words of Psalm 34:18 offer comfort to those grieving: “The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.”
May Father Patricio Sánchez Molinari rest in peace.
