An investigation into alleged drug trafficking activities at the Douala International Airport has reportedly led to the removal of four Gendarmerie officers from the airport, following revelations of a suspected network involving security personnel.
The development comes in the wake of a controversial altercation involving Captain Olive Bouba and a police officer, an incident that reportedly prompted authorities in Yaoundé to dispatch an investigative team to Douala to establish the circumstances surrounding the confrontation.
According to reports, the investigation went beyond the initial incident and uncovered allegations of collaboration between some Gendarmerie officers, customs officials and police personnel in facilitating the movement of illicit drugs through the airport.
Investigators reportedly discovered that consignments of suspected drugs had been able to pass through several security checkpoints before being loaded onto an aircraft, raising serious questions about the integrity of airport security procedures and the possible involvement of insiders.
In one of the incidents cited, Captain Olive Bouba is said to have entered an aircraft without prior announcement and removed suspected illegal drugs that had already made their way on board. Her intervention reportedly disrupted what investigators suspect was an established trafficking operation.
Sources further allege that some of the Gendarmerie officers involved were receiving as much as 500,000 CFA francs for each successful passage of the illicit consignments.
So far, four Gendarmerie officers have reportedly been removed from their positions at the Douala International Airport as investigations continue. The alleged involvement of other security personnel, including customs and police officers, is also said to be under scrutiny.
The revelations have once again drawn attention to the vulnerability of airport security systems when individuals entrusted with enforcing the law are suspected of abusing their positions.
While the investigation is reportedly ongoing, the authorities are expected to establish the full extent of the alleged network, identify all those involved and determine the appropriate legal and disciplinary measures.
For now, the case raises a critical question: how could suspected illicit consignments pass through multiple layers of security at one of Cameroon's most important international gateways without detection?
Note: The allegations remain subject to official confirmation and the outcome of ongoing investigations. Those implicated are presumed innocent unless proven guilty.
