Cameroon’s Under-15 Lions have made an impressive start to the inaugural FIFA U-15 World Cup and Festival in Azerbaijan, defeating Senegal 3-0 in their opening match on Saturday, October 24, 2026.
The young Indomitable Lions delivered a strong performance in the all-African encounter in Baku, scoring twice before half-time before adding a third goal in the second period to secure all three points.
Fareilromain Ngobo opened the scoring in the 17th minute with a powerful strike that left the Senegalese goalkeeper with little chance. Cameroon doubled their advantage just three minutes later when Andy Daniel Massoda capitalised on a defensive lapse following a corner kick to make it 2-0.
Senegal struggled to find a response before the break and went into half-time trailing by two goals.
The Senegalese side attempted to fight their way back into the contest after the restart, creating opportunities as they searched for a way back into the game. However, Cameroon remained in control and continued to pose a threat going forward.
Randy Ngome put the result beyond doubt in the 32nd minute, completing the scoring and sealing a convincing 3-0 victory for Cameroon.
The result gives the young Lions a confidence-boosting start to their campaign at a competition designed to give young footballers from across the world greater opportunities to compete internationally.
The FIFA U-15 World Cup and Festival is being held in Baku, Azerbaijan, from October 24 to 30, 2026. The inaugural edition brings together nearly 190 national teams in a new competition aimed at expanding international playing opportunities for boys born in 2011 or 2012.
Unlike the conventional FIFA World Cup format, the tournament features eight-a-side football, with matches played over two 20-minute halves on smaller pitches. Rolling substitutions are also permitted, allowing coaches to give more players valuable match experience.
Teams first compete in an initial group phase before being placed into six performance tiers according to their results. Each team continues playing through the tournament, with a winner crowned in every tier. The team that finishes on top of Tier A will be recognised as the inaugural FIFA U-15 World Cup and Festival champion.
According to FIFA, the format is intended to give young players more time on the ball, expose them to different footballing styles and provide meaningful international competition regardless of their country's footballing tradition.
Following their victory over Senegal, Cameroon will have little time to rest, with two more matches scheduled for Sunday, October 25.
The young Lions are due to face India before taking on Laos later in the day. Their remaining group-stage fixtures against Grenada and Bahrain are scheduled for Monday, October 26.
With several matches to play over a short period, squad rotation, recovery and consistency will be important as Cameroon seek to maintain their winning momentum.
The 3-0 victory over Senegal offers an encouraging opening for the Cameroonians, who will now look to build on their performance as they pursue a strong finish in the qualification phase and a favourable position in the tournament's next stage.
For the young players representing Cameroon on the international stage, the competition also provides an opportunity to gain experience, test themselves against opponents from different footballing backgrounds and take another step in their development.
